So I often edit on the wiki and I've run across characters or ships in movies such as Return of the Jedi that are only named in legends sources, for example Rear Admiral Chiraneau. Chiraneau appeared in Return of the Jedi but was named in a legends source so there is no canon equivalent even though the character appeared in the film. Having said this, I am aware that Leland Chee explained this in a thread on twitter some time ago. https://twitter.com/HolocronKeeper/status/877200182735011841 and https://twitter.com/HolocronKeeper/status/877210506787905536 We already use that same thread of tweets those two individual ones are a part of as sources for putting film promotion images of characters that were in movies.
What I'm not sure is if these two tweets are part of Wookieepedia's article creation policy. For example, let's say I want to create the canon equivalent of Chiraneau and use the two tweets as sources. Could I then go off and create the many other articles like the Thunderflare, or Jendon? If these types of articles that first appeared in movies are slowly confirmed canon like the Stalker, Guarlara (Star Destroyer), and Cabbel, who all first appeared in the movies, wouldn't that reinforce Leland's tweets and the stance of the Lucasfilm Story Group? Also what I am asking is for characters/ species/ items/ ships/ and etc that first appeared in the movies and named in now legends sources like Chiraneau, and not any other type of medium like legends video games or books that legends articles first appear in. The Unstable Terrain Artillery Transport/Canon was created when I asked Pablo Hidalgo in a now deleted tweet, on whether or not it was canon, and his response from what I remember was that something like "yes it appeared in Episode III on Mygeeto", which follows Leland's and seemingly the Story Group's logic on the subject.
I know that we already use this tweet: https://twitter.com/HolocronKeeper/status/765575801865588738 to create articles. I was going to put this in the discussion section attached to this wiki, then decided just to ask one of the admins instead, and then User:Xd1358 suggested it more efficient I write this here in the Senate Hall. Just something I've been heavily pondering lately, thanks!--Vitus Infinitus (talk) 07:37, December 10, 2017 (UTC)
- This also doesn't include any legends information about the articles except name and what's in the movies. Like Chiraneau is a human male Rear Admiral present on the Death Star II but a canon equivalent should not include that he also piloted a VT-49 Decimator in the past.--Vitus Infinitus (talk) 01:16, December 11, 2017 (UTC)
- Just because the general policy is to reuse the Legends names in canon doesn't mean it happens every time. As just two examples, Lieutenant Watts was rechristened Lieutenant Blanaid, and the spelling of Maximilian Veers was changed to Maximilian Veers. So I don't think we should make assumptions until a name is confirmed in a published source. Anyway, there are already hundreds of redlinks across the wiki, so there is no shortage of pages waiting to be created. No need to artificially inflate that pile. - Yes that's true but Leland stated on twitter that unless, or until, something comes out as otherwise that what was established, then changes should be made but for him it would be out of his way to create changes in the holocron for movie characters, vehicles, and etc, if they were already published. If changes do happen it would be because the story demands it, but otherwise it's safe to state that those characters and etc remain the same. And even if something changes like Maximilian Veers to Maximilian Veers, then we could easily adjust accordingly. Let's say for example Cabbel. He remained unnamed in the movie but the character is there. If we saw UT-ATs on Mygeeto but they were unnamed, they were still present in the battle. And the UT-ATs weren't named in any canon source yet but Story Group states that it is canon because it was in the movie and identified in another source. Every time we encounter legends articles in movies we have to go and ask LSG, and it got to the point where Leland explained that if it's in the movie and was identified in a different source that it's fair and square to be canon.--Vitus Infinitus (talk) 03:31, December 12, 2017 (UTC)
- We don't have to ask the Story Group about every film character, vehicle, and weapon. We could just wait until a published source confirms it. Leland's explanation may be genuine, or it may be a polite way of saying "quit bugging me about this stuff." What is the downside of waiting until a canon source confirms a name?
