Advanced Jedi Training Droid 6 (Talk to my master) 00:35, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
While uploading better versions of images from the Ewoks comic books (thanks to the recently Omnibus: Droids and Ewoks, I noticed that we don't have any good list of the members of Chief Chirpa's tribe of Ewoks, or, to put it another way, the denizens of Bright Tree Village. I thought about putting them all in a category: Category:Residents of Bright Tree Village, but I noticed we don't have any analogous categories for other cities, towns, or villages. We do have categories for residents of planets, all classified under Category:Individuals by planet. Nothing for the sub-planetary level, though.
So, before creating Category:Residents of Bright Tree Village, I wanted to solicit community opinions. Is this a Pandora's box, starting to classify folks by city/town/village of residence? Would it be better to list all the known residents of Bright Tree Village on the Bright Tree Village page? Or is such a list simply unnecessary?
I'd argue that the list is helpful and necessary based on this: There are still tons of unnamed Ewoks from Return of the Jedi. If we had a coherent list somewhere of all the known residents of Bright Tree Village, it would be much easier for the Powers that Be to retcon various unnamed screen Ewoks as the Ewoks named in the Ewoks cartoons and comic books. For instance, some unnamed Ewok in Jedi may, in fact, be Bozzie or Neddoo.
At any rate, what say ye? Thanks, ~Savage

- I think a category would be best here. A list on the village page would be more difficult to maintain and more likely to attract fanon, two of the reasons for the Great List Purge of 2008 and 2009. —MJ— War Room 23:05, May 9, 2013 (UTC)
- I agree. I'm just wondering if it would open the door to things like Category:Residents of Mos Eisley, Category:Residents of Coronet City, etc. , and if, so whether that would be a good or bad thing. ~Savage

- It would of course open the door to such categories, but that's a good thing IMO, as more specific categorization allows users to more easily find specific subsets of characters, without breaking the existing planet-based categorization as long as the city/village categories are properly subcategorized under their respective planets. —MJ— Holocomm 00:29, May 10, 2013 (UTC)
- Actually I think categories would be a bad idea. It would just lead to overflowing categorization on the articles, especially on larger ones like with Obi-Wan Kenobi. IMO we could list them (on a non-listing way) through context on the minor location article (villages and cities, not planets). Example: Known residents of x village during this time were x, y, z. - For Bright Tree Village, Mos Eisley, and Mos Espa, that list would be rather long... ~Savage

- Then don't have "lists" at all for those. Winterz (talk) 22:35, May 10, 2013 (UTC)
- Then, that defeats the purpose. The goal is to have a list of all residents of Bright Tree Village somewhere on the Wook to serve the needs of folks, like LFL and their writers, who want to name unnamed Ewoks. That's why a category is better, IMO, than just using the article for the town/village/city. :) Can you elaborate on why this would be a bad idea for someone like Kenobi? ~Savage

- I already gave you one. Overcategorization in more expanded subjects and also trivial. As for the lists, you should know they're not very much liked around here. You could very well do it the way I told in the first place under a section called "Residents" or within those lines. Winterz (talk) 22:58, May 10, 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not trying to be dense or difficult, but I don't understand why Kenobi would present a problem. Did he live in lots of different places, so he would have to have tons of new categories, or something? And as for the triviality, I think in the case of Bright Tree Village, this is value-added, not trivial. Knowing who is a resident of that village versus the rest of Endor is entirely useful information, IMO. But I'm happy to hear your opinion, and, again, I'm not trying to be difficult. Just soliciting opinion. ~Savage

- Now you're just looking to further argue. I gave Obi-Wan as an example but I could give others far more troubling like Anakin Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker. I say again, categories are a bad idea for this situation and listing formats aren't well accepted, not in the respective article at least. Also if you start one for Bright Tree Village, whats to stop someone else from making one for Galactic City residents. And yes it is trivial, how exactly would you know for sure who were the residents or who was just passing through? Anyway, if you really want to go with this and it's not with the format I've suggested, I see only one other thing that may be slightly suitable. A list article like for example List of planets. However, notice I'm still into the whole trivial thing. I think it might acquire a speculative status. Winterz (talk) 23:15, May 10, 2013 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks for the feedback. I get you on the "resident" vs. "just passing through" thing. I think that may be something to seriously consider. For instance, nothing says Neddoo lived in Bright Tree Village; we only know he was there at one particular time. But anything can be speculative; that's the job of editors to police and beat back, so I wouldn't be worried about that. And rest assured, I have no intention of arguing, only figuring out the best way to handle this--or let it drop. :) ~Savage

- To chip in, I also think that a list on the main page is a bad idea as it would be a magnet for fanon, and we have moved away from lists in general. Personally, I think a category based on affiliation would be best, as it is consistent with other practice and would avoid creating a precedent that would need to be navigated. To aid navigation, you could create a redirect for 'list of Bright Tree Village tribe members', etc. --Eyrezer (talk) 11:23, May 12, 2013 (UTC)
