Yes, it is painfully obvious that the IRC channel known as #wookieepedia registered at irc.freenode.net is not Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki. However, that does not, I feel, excuse the tyrannical behavior of Jaymach, the only op who seems to feel that the IRC channel is his own personal playground. He has banned me from the IRC channel for absolutely no legitimate reason. I'm not asking to be let back in - I'm asking that something be done about his consistent abuse of power in the IRC chatroom.--Goodwood 19:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

  • Even his 2nd RFA archive shows that some users felt that on IRC he's a tyrant. Jediknight19bby (Jedi High Council Chambers!) 20:05, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Oh boo-frickety-hoo. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 20:05, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Like I've said before...IRC is not the site...therefore the site is not somewhere to discuss the IRC room. Regardless, you were banned for spamming the channel with random comments. We ban people for doing it all the time, they're called vandals. —Jaymach Ral'Tir (talk) 20:08, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
      • "Useless comments"? That's BS and you know it, because it's as subjective as the smell of one's own armpits (and you said yourself that there are no rules). Anyone can tell you I'm no vandal, and if you seek to label me as such then you're the one who needs to be banned from the IRC. Apparently "sense of humor" is a no-no for being a channel op.--Goodwood 20:12, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
      • As far as could tell (and yes I was watching the conversation) it were just harmless jokes, not disruptive at all. And if you felt he was spamming the channel, then why was he not warned? why did you not ask him to stop? why did you make a joke about him making all those jokes? And when did he become a vandal? I've seen numerous "real" vandals disrupt the channel and get banned for it, he did not even get close to that. --Jedimca0(Do or Do Not, There is No Try) 20:26, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Jaymach is right that spammers should be blocked—and Goodwood was making random enough comments, however I think Jaymach's dislike for Goodwood (the origins of which I haven't a clue about) has made him ban Goodwood, and that if practically any other in any way established user was making those comments, they would not have been banned, or even booted. While I'm not going to go as far as saying Jaymach is an IRC tyrant, I can understand Goodwood feeling hard done by. -- AckbarSigdmirableAckbar (It's A Trap!) 20:22, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
  • I'm confused. Why is such a big deal being made of the IRC channel? Like Culator essentially said. Get over it. You are turning an ant hill (hell, whats smaller then an ant hill?) into a mountain or however that expression goes. I'm not sure if there was even previous negative history between you and Jaymach but really. If you are complaining about him being a tyrant (in a chat room mind you...) then you probably deserved to be banned. Grow up. --RedemptionRedemptionusersymbolTalk 20:47, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
  • The response to Goodwood's complaint really defeats the purpose of the noticeboard. It's become just another medium for abuse. Is no attempt to resolve this dispute to be made? Is this just another opportunity to be unkind to a clearly productive user? What happens to Goodwood—and anyone who is unlucky enough to fall into disfavor in the IRC—constitutes harassment, and in many cases, the abuse of administrative power. The IRC is not simply visited by those who wish to hang out in there and trade jibes with one another (something I have done myself, and take little issue with). Users go there to get help from admins and more experienced editors, projects are arranged with more expedience than talk pages allow, and new users stop in for any number of reasons. For these people, the outlook is bleak, as several users take these visits as opportunities to bully and belittle those who don't belong to their "in-crowd" of frequent chatters. I think something should really be done about the conduct of our chat room. - Graestan Jedi Order (This party's over) 01:39, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Very well said Graestan. Chack Jadson Talk 11:19, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
      • FWIW, I would not characterize Jaymach as a "tyrant," and I do think Goodwood has overreacted to certain things Jaymach has done. On the other hand, banning an obviously well-intentioned contributor from #wookieepedia for this kind of thing does strike me as a bit beyond an acceptable degree of Jaymachian abrasiveness, especially when one considers the fact that Fourdot spams #wookieepedia with at least as much off-topic stuff, yet isn't treated this way. Also, the channel is allegedly under NPA just as much as the site is, according to the channel greeting. I'm almost reluctant to mention that, though, because I would never be one to propose mandatory politeness in IRC— I mean, jeez, that WOULD be tyrannical. But I think both parties should voluntarily keep these things in mind, and I also think both parties could stand to lighten up about it. I get the impression these two just don't like each other, but IRC and the Senate Hall need not be used as weapons. Gonk (Gonk!) 11:43, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
        • Pardon my ignorance, but what's meant by 'NPA'? KEJ 12:08, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
          • No Personal Attacks—I'm not actually sure if the IRC greeting says that specifically; I was more alluding to the general Wookieepedia forum rule about being civil. Gonk (Gonk!) 12:21, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
            • Thanks. KEJ 12:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
  • That's it. I'm banning the lot of you. Including myself....Oh cra-- QuentinGeorge 12:42, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
  • Jaymach: Leave Goodwood alone. Goodwood: stop complaining incessantly about Jaymach screwing around -- you're only making it harder on yourself by overreacting. There, problem solved. Havac 15:07, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I too was also banned from IRC for talking about Scrubs by Darth Culator. I request to be unbanned. I will not post random comments again. Clark Kent300 17:18, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

  • After the third time you asked "does anyone watch scrubs" you said you'd stop, and I didn't ban you until the seventh time in two days. I have logs. I'll unlock you now, but I better not see the word "scrubs" again in any context. -- Darth Culator (Talk) 17:31, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Well, there go our in-depth MedStar discussions... -- Ozzel 18:36, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

I got banned after I referred to Scrubs when it was related to Star Wars. Clark Kent300 04:01, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

  • So let me see If I get this straight. You can get Banned from IRC chat by speaking off-topic and you can't even get a warning? Just like that? And what's worse all you get from some Wookiepedians is "Get over it?". And even worse, that ban can actually come from personal diferences, and most nobody seems to care?

Then sheesh! I sure hope I never get on the bad side of any IRC admins, otherwise I could get banned and there would be nothing to do about it. I like IRC a lot because its a faster way to get answers or get help than the tlalk pages, but I didn't know that you had to tread so lightly there to not get banned. :( Carlitos Moff 19:57, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

  • The uh, jurisdiction of IRC is somewhat disputed. Suffice to say that Wookieepedia policies don't always apply there. Also, it's not as extreme as some users would have you believe. Bans aren't given out for personal differences most of the time and being "kicked" out is no big deal because you can just rejoin. IRC is a generally relaxed place that allows Wookieepedians to get fast help in a nonchalant outlet. That being said, I do feel that some of our admins have gone a bit far in their antics/tomfoolery/stupidity in IRC and would like to see it reined in some.
