The result of the debate was no vote was started. 1358 (Talk) 09:35, June 15, 2020 (UTC)
I'd like to apologize in advance for any formatting mistakes I may have committed while making this topic, as I'm still not used to how this wiki's forums work.
On April 30th I started a thread in the Senate Hall regarding how articles about units from games, as well as some weapons and vehicles, were handled. As you can see from the lengthy list I assembled there, units from Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns suffer from inconsistent treatment by the wiki.
You can see more of my arguments on the subject in the Senate Hall thread I linked above, but the essence is that some articles have been merged while others have not, and in a very inconsistent manner. The articles that were not merged often tend to be stubs with little more than a paragraph to describe the unit in question, while other articles had been merged when there was no reason to do so.
Ultimately, I want to reduce the amount of clutter, stubs, and orphaned articles on the wiki along with the increasing amount of hunting and clicking that users will need to perform as a result of these things. We should try and make the information on this wiki as easy to find as possible in addition to ensuring its accuracy.
I'm not sure if I should start a vote (or votes) for consensus just yet because I'm not familiar with how things work in this particular forum, and would like to hear from more experienced editors, moderators, and administrators so that I avoid making any gaffes.
On a final note, I'd like to thank User:AnilSerifoglu for directing me to this part of the forums. Until he did I had no idea what it was used for, but now that I do I believe I may contribute more constructively to this wiki.--Valiran (talk) 15:09, May 27, 2020 (UTC)
- The Consensus track exists mostly for the voting itself. If you want to merge articles, the way to go is the Trash compactor, where you can nominate articles for deletion—just make sure to include the proposed measure in the TC vote, like "MERGE AND REDIRECT TO $ARTICLE" and "KEEP". Then once the vote concludes, the article will be redirected to the new target as soon as the information has been merged. 1358 (Talk) 16:24, May 31, 2020 (UTC)
- This is less about which articles I believe ought to be merged and more about asking for some kind of consistency, which is rather lacking in regards to Galactic Battlegrounds' units. I'm trying to get a coherent policy implemented about them and other articles which amount to little more than saying the same thing over and over again. Though since you've mentioned it, I also plan on nominating them in the Trash Compactor as well.--Valiran (talk) 21:43, June 1, 2020 (UTC)
- Having looked over some of the examples in the SH thread (admittedly, not every single one of them), I don't see an easy way out of it besides going through a TC and deciding on a case-by-case basis. I can agree with merging Imperial Missile Launcher Trooper and Imperial Armored Missile Trooper into one article, since having separate articles for a guy with one missile launcher and a guy with TWO missile launchers does indeed seem silly. However, I strongly disagree about merging the Imperial Pummel, the Rebel Pummel and all the others into just "Pummel." In my opinion, they are all distinct vehicles, produced by different factions throughout the course of many years, (likely) using different technology and materials, and visually different from each other. In my opinion, it would be like merging X-wings and TIE fighters into the starfighter article, or to give a real world example, merging the T-34, the M4 Sherman and the Panther into the general tank article on Wikipedia. Just because there currently exists a whole bunch of articles on this Wiki that are carbon copies of each other—to the point of even using the same gallery image—doesn't mean that we should sweep them all under the rug and call it a day. They require cleanup, yes, as well as providing different images, depicting ONLY the subject matter and not other related vehicles/troops; and after that has been done, such articles can potentially be even brought to status, most likely CA.
