I recently noticed that the instructions for typing dashes on Wookieepedia:Manual of Style/Proper use of the dash (WP:DASH) allows for non-HTML dashes, such as using a GUI character markup program or using Windows' system. I propose that we strike those two suggestions; since we require HTML (– or —) on status article nowadays, it only makes sense to mandate the practice across the Wook.
We shall therefore replace:
- One of the easiest ways is to create em dashes by typing "—" and en dashes by typing "–".
- Alternatively, a GUI character selection program can be used to insert dashes directly into the edit box without using HTML markup. In case of Windows, you can use the Character Map application (charmap.exe). Similar programs exist on other platforms as well.
- Using Windows, you can type Alt-0150 to produce an en dash or Alt-0151 for an em dash. Remember that digit keys need to be pressed on the numpad and for some browsers, such as Opera, Num Lock mode must be on.
With:
- An em dash should be created by typing "—" and en dashes by typing "–".

Discussion
I support this as far as it goes, but would really rather see both dashes templated, and have our style guide recommend that. For legibility when doing source edits, "Luke Skywalker{{dash}}who would later become the last Jedi{{dash}}grew up on Tatooine" easily beats "Luke Skywalker—who would later become the last Jedi—grew up on Tatooine." - Counterproductive how, Manoof? Another advantage to templating dashes would be that the templates could have aliases encoding semantic information: {{range}} could be used in things like "4{{range}}8 kilometers," for instance, so editors don't have to remember or repeatedly look up which hyphen/dash goes in a number range. - For all intents and purposes, using html is a template, only with & and ; surrounding the "template name" instead of {{}}. Furthermore, the number range thing is so straightforward that most should be able to remember which one to use after only a few times—and if they don't, our lovely dash policy page makes it nice and clear. - Yes, the HTML tag is basically a template; I'm looking at the legibility in the source editor of the one set of delimiters versus the other. Am I the only one who finds the braces in the "Luke" example above more legible? Asithol (talk) 14:45, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- I can't speak for everyone, but I certainly don't see a difference in terms of legibility. JediMasterMacaroni(Talk) 18:31, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- I don't either. VergenceScatter (talk) 20:08, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

- All good, hopefully you're able to get used to typing the various dashes this way :) JediMasterMacaroni(Talk) 07:13, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
