I don't know if Bots are only admin tools, or if any user can create one, so I'm making this request here. A while back, a user changed tons of articles with the word "sentient" and replaced it with "sapient". Since the word sentient is what is used in the Star Wars universe, the Sapient article redirects to Sentient, and there are still 573 articles (after the 40 or so I've already corrected) using the word, can a bot be created, or an existing bot be altered, to automatically change all instances of the word sapient to sentient? I'll keep working on it, but the thought of manually correcting 573 articles is rather daunting. - JMAS 05:37, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

  • Although I personally laud your crusade, I would just like to point out that I have seen the word "sapient" used in a number of Star Wars novels, even if the names of the precise works escape me. Eh, it's your bag.--Goodwood 16:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
    • I can't recall a single novel or other source (and I have a lot) that uses the word sapient. However, whatever ones there may be are massively outweighed by the ones that use sentient. - JMAS 19:00, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
      • I, too, would like to see a source that uses the term "sapient," as I've also never seen it in a Star Wars work. jSarek 21:41, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
        • See Wookieepedia:Bot_requests#Sapient_to_Sentient. It's got the list. —Xwing328(Talk) 03:25, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
          • As I have since seen. Thank you, though. :-) jSarek 09:36, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
  • IIRC, sapient means human-like intellegence, while sentient means it reacts to impulses (basically, it's alive). Many articles of sapient beings have them mislabeled as sentient.-Andur Dral'runi 01:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
    • The reasons for using sentient have been explained already. Go vote here: Forum:Sentient vs Sapient. -Fnlayson 04:46, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Andur, those are indeed the proper meanings of the words. Unfortunately, like a lot of SF, Star Wars uses "sentient" where it means "sapient"; I suspect this dates back to a time when it was thought that non-sapient beings didn't really "feel" things, thus making the terms synonyms. Since "sentient" is the term most widely and generally used in Star Wars canon, it's what we should use here, even though in our world it's technically wrong. jSarek 07:45, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
