"The battle is won, so I'm leaving. TK-332, you're in charge now. I'm confident you can handle it."
"But all I have is this water pistol, and I'm out of water!"
―Darth Vader and TK-332[4]

Water pistols, also known as water blasters, were a variety of gun that fired water. They came in a variety of colors and sizes. Some water pistols, such as a number in use on the planet Tatooine, were used by younglings as toys. Water pistols could also, however, be equipped as weaponry; on one occasion, the rebel Luke Skywalker used a water pistol to hinder the droid bounty hunter IG-88. On another occasion, a group of stormtroopers on the planet Mohan—among them Stormtrooper Commander TK-332—were equipped with water pistols during a battle on the planet, and the inappropriate form of weaponry ended up costing their forces the battle.

Description

Water pistols, also referred to as water blasters,[3] were a type of toy gun that fired water. Larger variants utilized as toys were multicolored, with blue, white, lime, and orange parts.[1] Smaller variants, which could be equipped as weaponry, could have a reddish-purple[3] or orange coloration. They were capable of incapacitating droids.[2]

History

"While you were gone, rebel support forces arrived and our troops failed to repel the attack, their water blasters proving useless."
―Darth Sidious, to Darth Vader[5]

Between 1 BBY and 4 ABY,[6] during the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, several stormtroopers wielded water pistols during a battle on the planet Mohan. After the Imperial forces had ostensibly emerged victorious,[3] the Sith Lord[7] Darth Vader placed Stormtrooper Commander TK-332 in charge, prompting them to complain that they did not wish to be on "Team Vader" due to their now-depleted water pistol. Nonetheless, Vader departed and reported the Empire's "victory" on Mohan to[3] his Sith Master,[7] Darth Sidious. Sidious informed Vader the battle had actually been a loss for the Empire, revealing that, after Vader's departure, the stormtroopers' water pistols rendered them incapable of holding off a rebel counterattack.[3]

At another point during the Galactic Civil War[2]—between 0 BBY and 4 ABY[6]—Vader reported a recent failed attempt at capturing the rebel Luke Skywalker to Sidious. Vader reported he had hired the assassin droid bounty hunter IG-88 to capture Skywalker, who foiled the attempt by rendering the droid inoperable with a water pistol. Out of anger toward IG-88's—and, by extension, Vader's—failure, Sidious sprayed Vader with a water pistol as well.[2]

A group of younglings in Mos Eisley[1] spaceport on the planet[7] Tatooine played with water pistols[1] around 9 ABY,[8] but the water in them ran out alongside much of the spaceport's water. Soon afterward,[1] Daimyo[7] Boba Fett[1] and assassin[7] Fennec Shand delivered several blocks of ice to Mos Eisley via Fett's ship,[1] the Slave I,[9] providing the younglings and townsfolk with a new source of water. As the townsfolk celebrated, one youngling ran up to Fett, sprayed[1] him[9] in the face, then ran away.[1]

Behind the scenes

Water pistols first appeared in "Hot Day Hijinks,"[1] a non-canon LEGO short released on the official LEGO[10] and Star Wars Kids YouTube channels on August 5, 2022.[11] They were first identified as both water pistols and water blasters in "The Greatest Apprentice Assistant," a comic written by Martin Fisher and released as part of the LEGO Star Wars magazine's 126th issue,[3] which was released on August 31, 2025 in the United Kingdom.[12] Water guns were first mentioned in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 2011 video game Star Wars: The Old Republic, developed by BioWare and jointly published by LucasArts and Electronic Arts.[13] In real life, a water gun, or water pistol, is a toy gun that shoots water.[14]

  6. 6.0 6.1 Star Wars: Timelines states the Battle of Scarif, the beginning of open war between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic according to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, took place in 1 BBY. Timelines also places the death of Darth Vader in 4 ABY. As such, the battle on Mohan, which involved Vader as depicted in "The Greatest Apprentice Assistant," must have taken place during this period of time. Additionally, as "Darth Vader: Hunter for Hire" depicts Vader discussing an attempt to apprehend then-rebel Luke Skywalker, the events of "Hunter for Hire" must have occurred between 0 BBY and 4 ABY, as, per Timelines, Luke Skywalker's involvement in the Galactic Civil War began in 0 BBY, and Vader's aforementioned death took place in 4 ABY.
