"It must have been a terrible strike, to leave a scar like that."
The Traveler, commenting on the blaster bolt that injured the Ronin's jaw[1]

The wakizashi blaster[2] was a blaster owned by the former Sith known as the Ronin. It had previously been owned by a lord, but the Ronin took the blaster from the lord after he made a failed attempt to kill the Ronin, shooting his jaw[1] It featured a magazine,[2] and the Ronin kept it in his belt, next to his lightsaber. By the time it came into the Ronin's possession, after the Sith rebellion, the weapon was ancient, and was more maintained than used in practice.[1]

Behind the scenes

The wakizashi blaster first appeared in "The Duel," a short film in the Star Wars: Visions series written by Takashi Okazaki and directed by Takanobu Mizuno. The animated short, produced by Kamikaze Douga, was released on Disney+[3] on September 22, 2021.[4]

It also appeared in the one-shot comic Visions 1, written and illustrated by Okazaki and published by Marvel Comics[5] on October 12, 2022.[6] On June 15 of that year, a StarWars.com article revealed concept art created for the comic by Okazaki that depicted the blaster, labeling it "脇差ブラスター" (wakizashi blaster) and identifying the magazine location.[2] Wakizashi are short blades that were worn by samurai on the waist alongside a katana, intended for close-range combat.[7] An earlier sketch of the Ronin from 2020 included an arrow towards the blaster with the description "わきざしセイバー or ブラスター" (wakizashi saber or blaster), indicating that the type of weapon had not yet been defined at that stage.[8]
