- "Give me that. You could get yourself killed…"
"Messa know. Messa almost did. Five times." - ―Clone Captain Rex and Jar Jar Binks
Jedi General Laan Tik wielded a blue lightsaber during the Battle of Mimban in 22 BBY during the Clone Wars between Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. When Tik fell in battle, Republic Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks took the lightsaber and nearly killed himself several times with the weapon, eventually managing to save Clone Captain Rex from several B1-series battle droids by using the lightsaber.
Description
A single-bladed blue lightsaber was wielded by Jedi General Laan Tik.[1] Powered by a kyber crystal,[2] the lightsaber had a gray cylindrical hilt which ended with a black grip mounted by a black hilt-ring. Toward the blade end of the hilt was an activation button.[1]
History
- "Mesa took this so it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands."
"Like yours, you mean?" - ―Jar Jar Binks and Rex, about Laan Tik's lightsaber
Laan Tik (right) wielded his lightsaber during the Battle of Mimban.
Tik carried the weapon with him during the Battle of Mimban on[1] the planet[3] of the same name.[1] The 22 BBY[4] Clone Wars engagement was fought by Tik's Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[1]
When Tik fell in battle, Republic Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks took the lightsaber to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Later, having nearly killed himself five times with the weapon, Binks used it to strike down the B1-series battle droids that were about to execute an embattled Clone Captain Rex, saving him. As the lightsaber then slipped from Binks's hands, Rex chastised the representative and confiscated the weapon to prevent him from causing injury. The two then fought their way to a Separatist shield generator, with the captain refusing Binks's request to have the lightsaber back.[1]
Behind the scenes
Laan Tik's lightsaber appeared in the comic story "501 Plus One," published by Marvel Comics in the one-shot comic Age of Republic Special 1[1] on January 16, 2019.[5] The story was written by Marc Guggenheim and illustrated by Caspar Wijngaard.[1] Guggenheim was asked by Marvel Comics editor Mark Paniccia to include a role for Jar Jar Binks after he had already started writing the story, which had not been initially intended to include the character. The author felt that the process of adding Binks was an interesting challenge, later reminiscing that he appreciated the opportunity to "try to make him cool,"[6] which ultimately resulted in the plot point of the Junior Representative wielding Tik's lightsaber.[1]
