The Gungan Staff,[1] also called a staff of authority, was owned by Boss Rugor Nass,[2] who led the Gungan species in the city Otoh Gunga on[1] the planet[3] Naboo. The staff was black and had two triangular supporting branches at the bottom, which had holes next to the body of the staff. The tip of the staff held a roughly circular shape with a symmetrical pattern of holes throughout it. The center of the tip contained three round teal objects.[1]

Nass held the staff when[3] he[1] exiled the clumsy Gungan Jar Jar Binks from the Gungan Swamp for causing too many accidents. During the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation[3] in 32 BBY,[4] Nass raised the staff at the Gungan Sacred Place in front of a crowd of Gungans who had evacuated Otoh Gunga following the Trade Federation's siege of the city.[3]

Behind the scenes

The Gungan Staff was first revealed when it was included as an accessory for the Boss Nass action figure in Hasbro's Star Wars: Episode I toy line,[1] released in May 1999.[5] The staff then first appeared in the 2000 Star Wars Junior picture book Gungan Trouble!, written by Liza Baker and illustrated by Jerry Vanderstelt.[3] The staff was identified as a staff of authority in the 2012 reference book Star Wars: The Ultimate Action Figure Collection by Stephen J. Sansweet.[2]
