Rancor keeper[3] was a beastmaster[4] profession related specifically to someone tasked with the the exhaustive upbringing, training, and care[3] of a semi-sentient[5] reptilian[6] rancor. Commonly employed by members of the Hutt Clan,[1] these skilled keepers would develop strong bonds with their rancors,[7] oftentimes from a young age.[4] Rancors raised by keepers were considered easier to contain and control,[8] harkening back to their original domestication and bonds with the Witches of Dathomir.[9][8]

Some time prior to 1 BBY,[10] the Human slave Malakili became a beastmaster and rancor keeper for Jabba the Hutt's criminal empire,[7] taking care of Jabba's pet rancor[11] Pateesa[4] under the Hutt's palace on Tatooine until Luke Skywalker killed Pateesa[2] in 4 ABY.[12]
In 9 ABY,[13] the Ugnaught Hunter Dizzy,[14] one half of Team Slingshot,[15] owned a rancor keeper costume that he could don for the Hunters of the Outer Rim competition on Vespaara.[16] That same year,[17] a rancor and its keeper were gifted to the newly established Daimyo Boba Fett by the Hutts known as the Twins.[1]
