The Ensel were a sentient species from the world of Enselon. Jedi Alta Ranga was an Ensel.[1]
Biology and appearance
This bipedal species was distinguished by their blue, pink, and tan skin, as well as their large craniums.[1]
Society and culture
This species hailed from a celestial body known as Enselon.[2]
Species in the galaxy
By 22 BBY,[3] an Ensel by the name of Alta Ranga had become a Jedi Master of the Jedi Order, serving as a member of Mace Windu's Jedi assault team during the First Battle of Geonosis.[4]
Behind the scenes
George Lucas observing various potential designs for Dexter Jettster, including what would become the Ensel.
This species was originally designed as a maquette bust by John Knoll and team to serve as a potential design for the character Dexter Jettster, presented alongside twenty-three others for George Lucas to choose from. Though Lucas would eventually request to combine two of the other head sculpts to become the Besalisk species, a handful of the unselected maquettes would be recycled into additional alien Jedi to be used in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[5] including the Vurk Coleman Trebor, the Ongree Pablo-Jill, and the various busts of famous and infamous Jedi displayed throughout the Jedi Archives, such as Chon Actrion.[3]
The full body Ensel maquette recycled from the rejected head sculpt.
This species was one of these selected, with a full-body maquette greenlit,[1] as well as concept at created specifically for a Jedi Master of this species, Alta Ranga, designed by Dermot Power.[6] The design never actually made it into film, and no evidence that a CGI model for Alta Ranga was even created, though they would be revealed and expanded upon later within supplementary media for Attack of the Clones,[1] with Leland Chee confirming that Alta Ranga was present at, and survived, the First Battle of Geonosis, just not onscreen.[4]
