"The Bane Back Spider is a gift to the Spider Clan. Its viciousness is a match for our own."
―A Spiderclan web dancer[2]

The Bane Back spider was a subtype of gaping spider, an arachnid creature native to the planet Dathomir.[1] A mutated variant,[2] this creature was larger, stronger and more resistant to average gaping spider.[1]

History

"It was 50 meters tall! It had fangs growing out of it's back! Its back ridges were razor sharp! I only survived because of my lucky thermal detonator!"
Geeot Nuetia[2]

The existence of the Bane Back spider was first reported during the Galactic Civil War. An individual by the name Geeot Nuetia encountered such creature during a hunting trip on Dathomir after the Battle of Yavin. He later claimed in the Corellian newspaper Coronet Gossip that a 50-meter tall Bane Back spider attacked him and pretended that he killed it with a thermal detonator. Later, a journalist went to Dathomir to investigate the creature but only found 2-3 meters tall spiders.[2]

Then, in 1 ABY,[3] adventurous spacers traveled to Dathomir in order to hunt Bane Back spiders. The creatures were known to have been seen near the Spider Clan Cave.[1] After killing a spider, one of the spacer later used a carapace as a trophy.[1][4]

  3. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
