An artificial life-signs generator was a decoy system used to simulate the presence of a life form aboard a starship.
History

One of these devices was mounted by the Rebel Alliance inside Commander Silam Dunerz's escape pod to simulate the presence of a captured Princess Leia Organa onboard. Picking up two life forms aboard the escape pod on the sensors of their Star Destroyer, the Imperials believed that the Supply Master had succeeded in his mission to capture the Princess. Darth Vader ordered his men to retrieve the escape pod and to inform the Emperor of their success.[1]
After the escape pod was brought into the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, Dunerz revealed that the Rebels had installed an artificial life-signs generator aboard and apologized for his failure. The Sith Lord then used the Force to choke Dunerz to death, declaring that he did not give second chances and that Dunerz's apology was not accepted.[1]
