The E-Wing: Type B was a modified version of the base E-wing escort starfighter manufactured by FreiTek Incorporated. Due to the initial designs of the E-wing relying on synthetically spin-sealed Tibanna gas to power the laser cannons, the starfighters' weapon system were found to be underpowered.[1] The gas broke down too quickly, reducing the effective range of the E-wing's weapons.[2]
New Republic technicians were unable to devise a permanent solution to the problem in time as the E-wings were to be deployed in combat on the planet Dac. Instead, the technicians rigged the laser cannons to accept triple the standard power feed. The increased power brought the weapons up to an acceptable combat range, but the jury-rigging left the fighters vulnerable to a terminal power overload.[1]
