A dolphin was a type of creature. The sentient Duor species of the waterworld Arrakan, members of which possessed streamlined bodies with a snout, fins, and flippers, physically resembled dolphins.[1]

Dolphins were introduced in the Legends continuity of the Star Wars franchise in the second part of Phil Sidebotham's roleplaying adventure "Flight of the Jedi," which was published in the Spring 2000 twentieth issue of the Valkyrie magazine for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[1] In the real world, dolphins are mammals which are classified as toothed whales and which have spindle-shaped bodies—mostly less than three meters in length—and toothed snouts. Dolphins exhibit remarkable intelligence, playfulness, and friendliness to humans.[2]

Recordings of sounds made by dolphins were used to create the voice of the Wookiee Chewbacca in[3] the 19771983 original trilogy of Star Wars films[4] as well as the sounds made by the acklay creature in[5] the 2002 prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.[4] In addition, during the development of[6] the 2005 prequel trilogy installment Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith,[4] the skin texture of the sentient Kallidahin species was inspired by that of dolphins.[6] Dolphins also went on to have an indirect role in the visual design of Solo: A Star Wars Story,[7] a 2018 film of the current Star Wars canon's Star Wars Anthology Series,[4] where a reference image of a painted and lacquered dolphin skull served as inspiration for the helmet worn by the character Enfys Nest.[7]
