Dern was a male Human sergeant of the Galactic Republic army's Zero Squad. During the Galactic War he was stationed on Hoth, where he led a Zero Squad contingent to reclaim the Tromper Crags Geothermal Plant from the Ortolan settlers under Ooren Tai. Dern attempted to destroy the facility in an effort to severely cripple both the White Maw pirates and the Sith Empire's presence in the area. However, knowing that this action would also spell disaster for the Ortalans, Tai put himself between Dern and the plant controls to prevent the Human from destroying it. At the same time, the Sith Empire had pursued Zero Squad, eventually finding Dern holding Tai at gunpoint before killing him too.
Tai would then quickly contract his peoples' services to the Empire, and would later find that being in their employ was more beneficial than being in the Republic's.
