"Derg? You mean the biologist. That's interesting. I was just thinking about him after reading the HoloNet. What is Derg up to these days?"
"Well sir, he is dead."
Cale Herron and a spacer[2]

Derg Prantis was a male Twi'lek biologist who lived on Tatooine during the Galactic Civil War.

Biography

"This is Derg Prantis and it may very well may be my last recording. I've barricaded myself in the biolab hoping to buy some time while I contact the authorities but someone is jamming my comm-signal. If you get this data disk, Bera, please take it to Cale Herron at Mos Taike. Oh no...please! I am unarmed..."
―Derg Prantis[2]

Derg Prantis was a biologist serving as chief scientist of the Mos Eisley Biolab, based in Mos Eisley, on the planet Tatooine. One of his employees was the female Aqualish lab assistant Bera Jeza.[2]

By the time of the Battle of Yavin, Derg Prantis obtained a sample of the dreadful Blackwing virus from an Imperial scientist.[3] The Empire had secretly recruited a group of scientists on the planet Dathomir to turn the virus into a bioweapon.[4] Prantis therefore built a secret laboratory on the remote planet Lok to conduct his own research on the virus in order to create a super soldier drug. The scientist recruited his lab assistant Bera Jeza to help him the project. However, Jeza soon betrayed her employer and contacted the Hutt Crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure to sell him the super soldier drug. Having discovered the betrayal, Derg Prantis requested his long time associate Cale Herron to help him evacuate his secret lab and destroy evidence.[3] However, the lab was brutally attacked before Herron could intervene and the entire staff was assassinated.[5] Prantis eventually returned to the Mos Eisley Biolab on Tatooine.[2]

In 1 ABY,[1] the laboratory in Mos Eisley was attacked and Prantis was assassinated. In the meanwhile, Bera Jeza was murdered in a street of Mos Eisley. As Jeza had ties with Jabba the Hutt, his majordomo Bib Fortuna hired a spacer to investigate the crime. The spacer discovered Prantis's corpse in the laboratory along with a data disk. The disk contained Derg Prantis's last words, with instructions to contact Cale Herron in Mos Taike.[2] With the help of Herron, the spacer investigated Derg Prantis's secret lab on Lok.[5] The investigation finally led to the discovery of a Blackwing outbreak on Dathomir.[4]

Behind the scenes

Derg Prantis appeared as a dead non-player character (NPC) in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[2] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[6] Derg Prantis was added to the game with the "Game Update 13," released on September 30, 2009.[7] This NPC was part of the questline "Something is Obviously Wrong,"[2] an introduction to the "Death Troopers" update.[8]

  1. 1.0 1.1 The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
