Cruisers were aquatic vehicles that could serve either as a military naval vessel[1] or as a luxury civilian craft.[2] Galactic and local militaries deployed aquatic cruisers into combat,[1] and they were prominently used in conflicts such as the Clone Wars[3] and the Galactic Civil War. The Gungan Grand Army, the Royal Naboo Security Forces, the Trade Federation Droid Army, the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Grand Army of the Republic, the Galactic Empire, the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and the Wookiees were all known to have fielded cruisers as part of their naval forces. Gungan naval forces fielded the Bongo Behemoth cruiser, the Alliance operated the Prowler, and the Trade Federation used the S-CRS.[1]
Cruisers were developed as part of the ongoing escalation of the aquatic arms race. As land-based forces began to employ artillery effectively, cruisers were built which had the ability to launch projectiles from the safety of the ocean.[1] Cruisers released volleys of artillery fire and were suited to bombarding coastal areas. More advanced versions had greater firepower and range, capable of hitting targets away from the coast and further inland. Cruisers excelled at staying out of combat and striking targets from afar; they were vulnerable to aerial assault or from quick attacks by faster aquatic vessels.[4]
Luxury oceanic and surface cruisers were constructed by companies such as Pantolomin Shipwrights. The Coral Vanda was a luxury cruiser that travelled throughout the oceans of Pantolomin.[2]
