The Cormorant[3] was a rundown space tug ship that Annisoukaline Kalfus and her mom used to live in.[2]
Behind the Scenes
The Cormorant was designed by Aurelien Predal from the Aardman short "I Am Your Mother". This ship was mix between tugboats in the UK and various Star Wars elements to make it something utilitarian, sturdy, chunky and rusty like it hasn't been used in years. The ship's bumpers are gradually turned to bumper pads on springs which brought a vibe from one of the classic Wallace & Gromit short films "The Wrong Trousers". The challenge to create the ship to blend both the humor and quirkiness of Aardman was to apply the design rules around the characteristic designs language of Star Wars, evolving the ship towards a fish-like appearance that reflects the fish out of water situation on Anni and her mother.[1]
In order to give a most precise blue-point to the model making department at Aardman, Predal quickly mock up the design in Maya to easily do iterations, adjust proportions & scale and check everything that would work as wanted while extracting orthographic views that could pass on to the art department, lead by art director Andy Brown and his team to built the sets and ships with 2 scales of the Cormoran being one 1:1 with the puppets and on half size for all the flying sequences of the short.[1]
