- "Very professional. Especially all the detail around the trees and clouds."
"You like it? Look closer."
"Is that writing?"
"Yes, it is. Very good. It's called a cloud diary."
"Art and chronicle combined." - ―Haplif and Yomie discuss Yomie's cloud diary
Cloud diaries were journals used by Chiss as diaries and artistic canvases depicting nature. The writing in cloud diaries was stylized into small features that composed the details of the drawing. Yomie described the Agbui's manipulations in her cloud diary and was killed by Haplif to silence her revelations.
Description
Cloud diaries were multi-page journals used by Chiss to write and draw natural landscapes such as plains, trees, clouds, mountains, and oceans. Cloud diaries' pages could be removed and re-inserted. The writing in them was small and stylized, and formed the details of the pictures drawn.[1]
History
Yomie, a Chiss female, kept a cloud diary when traveling with her betrothed Yoponek, which she continued writing after joining a group of Agbui led by Haplif[1] around 18 BBY.[2] The Agbui claimed to be "cultural nomads", but were attempting to subvert the Chiss nation on behalf of an expansionist empire.[1]
Haplif hoped to read Yomie's cloud diary to learn her motivations to better manipulate her, but she did not let him. When Yomie left the Agbui's starship, she took her diary so Haplif could not read it. After spending several weeks bird-watching on the planet Shihon, Yomie deduced that the Agbui possessed telepathy and were manipulating the Chiss. Yomie recorded everything she knew about the Agbui in her cloud diary. To prevent that knowledge's spread, Haplif murdered Yomie, dumping her and her diary into the vacuum of space.[1]
Behind the scenes
A cloud diary appeared in flashbacks in Timothy Zahn's 2021 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good.[1]

- ↑ Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good establishes that Yomie and Yoponek were joined by the Agbui prior to the main events of the novel and after the battle over Primea, depicted in Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising. Chaos Rising takes place in the year 19 BBY per Star Wars: Timelines. Greater Good establishes that the attack on the Paataatus, which was depicted in Chaos Rising, took place "last year." Therefore, Greater Good must be set around 18 BBY, so the Agbui must have joined Yomie and Yoponek between those two years.
