- "It's a device of Chiss design. Totally dormant except when in hyperspace, a time when virtually no one thinks to do scans for such things. We've followed Bastion's movement from system to system with a great deal of interest."
- ―Commander Kres'ten'tarthi, to Mara Jade
The Chiss homing beacon[1] was a homing beacon designed by the Chiss species.[2] The beacon was reliable and required little energy. It utilized the domain of hyperspace itself as a signal carrier. The transmission generated by a Chiss beacon could only be detected by the Chiss.[1]
Before his death, Grand Admiral Thrawn installed a tiny Chiss beacon[1] in a dummy file inside the central Imperial Records Library, to allow the Empire of the Hand to track the location of the secret Imperial capital world of Bastion.[2]
