The Chief of Defense Staff was the professional head of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. In the event that Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic Palpatine was declared unfit for duty, the Chief of Defense Staff was to take command of the Grand Army until a new Chancellor was elected.
