Bloodrites are intense rituals conducted by the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine. To earn full adult status within their tribe, young Tusken hunters must torture a creature to death over a period of weeks. To gain highest status amongst the clan, the tortured creature must belong to a sentient species. The importance of this ritual drives rival Tusken clans to hunt one another during bloodrite season, a time when human settlers and moisture farmers are particularly vulnerable as prized torture victims.^[1] Shmi Skywalker fell victim to a Tusken clan's bloodrite ritual in 22 BBY^[2] while picking vaporator mushrooms^[2] at the Lars moisture farm.
