"Groups like the Happy Blasters give this trade a bad name. Almost anyone can tell you about the disasters these types of mercenaries have caused, incidents like the Benkal Plagues or the water crisis on Orroman, but not many people can remember the name of the scout who discovered their world or who charted the territory they live in."
―Personal addendum in Korren Starchaser's datafiles[1]

The Benkal Plagues were a series of widely-known disease outbreaks that occurred at some point by the time of the existence of the New Republic[1] and originated in[2] the Benkal system of Wild Space.[3] The outbreaks were caused by a group of mercenaries which, in a personal addendum to his datafiles, the New Republic scout Korren Starchaser compared to the ultra-violent Happy Blasters mercenary team.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Benkal Plagues were mentioned in "Scouts' Dispatch," a feature written by Peter Woodworth and published in the May 1997 thirteenth issue of the Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine.[1]
