- "His cousin escaped and took him to Zehava. He had a few peaceful years, but then the Daan attacked the Melida sector, and his cousin had to fight. She was seventeen, old enough then. She died, too. Nield was left on the streets to fend for himself. He was eight years old."
- ―Cerasi, recounting Nield's childhood to Obi-Wan Kenobi
Around 49 BBY,[2] a battle occurred in the city Zehava on the planet Melida/Daan.[1] One of the many conflicts[3] between the warring tribes of the Melida and Daan, the fighting began when the Daan launched an assault against the Melida sector of the city. The Daan child Nield and his cousin—who had fled to Zehava previously after a conflict in their village were present, and the boy's cousin was forced to fight. However, the cousin was eventually killed in the battle. The orphaned eight-year-old Nield, left on the streets by himself, joined many of the planet's children in a group—the Young—to fight for peace on Melida/Daan.[1] In 44 BBY,[2] Nield's friend Cerasi recounted the struggles of the former's childhood, including the Zehava battle, to Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Padawan's mission to the world.[1]
Behind the scenes
The battle was first mentioned in the 1999 young-readers book The Defenders of the Dead, which was written by Jude Watson as the fifth entry of the Jedi Apprentice series.[1]

The novel also establishes that Nield is nearly the same age as Obi-Wan Kenobi, whom the book establishes was thirteen years old during its events. As The Defenders of the Dead establishes that the battle took place Nield was eight years old, it must have occurred around 49 BBY.
