- "Flank left and from above."
"Sir, there's too much fire!"
"Flank them, you idiot!" - ―The Stormtrooper Commander and one of his subordinates
The Battle of Tython[4] was a skirmish that took place on the planet Tython between a remnant of the Galactic Empire led by Moff Gideon, and the Mandalorian Din Djarin and his allies, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, during the New Republic Era[3] in 9 ABY.[4]
The battle
The battle began with stormtroopers disembarking off of an imperial transport, and advancing up of the mountain where Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and Din Djarin were located, in an attempt to capture The Child, who was at the top of the mountain. The stormtroopers quickly took heavy casualties as Fennec Shand and Boba Fett fired upon them. The Stormtrooper Commander in charge of the assault ordered one of his troops to flank left and from above. Upon being told that there was too much fire, the commander called his subordinate an idiot, right before the subordinate was shot. Meanwhile, Boba Fett used his gaderffii stick to attack several stormtroopers. At the same time, an artillery stormtrooper set up and deployed a mortar, attempting to use it on Fennec Shand. Meanwhile, stormtroopers set up a E-HOB heavy repeating blaster and opened fire on Fennec, who retreated behind a large rock. Fennec pushed the rock downhill towards the stormtroopers who desperately tried to get away. Several were crushed, including the E-HOB gunner. The Stormtrooper Commander ordered his troops to advance, but was then ambushed and killed by Boba Fett, who retrieved his armor. Meanwhile, Din Djarin came to Fennec's aid, firing whistling birds at the stormtroopers, who had been reinforced by a second troop transport. Boba Fett appeared with his armor, and killed several stormtroopers, prompting the rest to retreat. Boba then fired a missile at the retreating ships, destroying them both. However, a turbolaser blast came from the sky, fired from Gideon's light cruiser. Shortly after, Grogu was abducted by Gideon's Dark Troopers.[3]
Behind the scenes
The battle appeared in "Chapter 14: The Tragedy" of Jon Favreau's 2019 Disney+ television series Star Wars: The Mandalorian, written by Favreau and directed by Robert Rodriguez[3] and released on December 4, 2020.[6]
To visualize the skirmish between Din Djarin, Fennec Shand, and Boba Fett against Gideon's Imperial remnant, Rodriguez had his young sons dress with some Halloween costumes and used some Star Wars action figures to record a walkthrough of the planned sequence. He ended up turning a three-page battle scene into a nine-minute sequence, given that he had wanted to see Fett back since he was a kid but felt that it was necessary to have him feel and move different so he would not look like the Mandalorian, as he was unaware if Fett would be returning in further episodes at the time.[7]
