The Battle of Hoth that occurred during 1 BBY[2] was between forces of the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance. T-47 airspeeder pilots defended Rebel ground troops from several AT-AT walkers.[1]
A Star Tours StarSpeeder 1000 passenger ship piloted by C-3PO and R2-D2 accidentally ended up in the middle of the battle after fleeing into hyperspace to escape an Imperial raid at Spaceport THX1138. One Rebel pilot warned to the StarSpeeder to leave the combat area, but the speeder was briefly disabled by blaster fire from a walker and slid down a snowy mountainside before launching back into space.[1]
Behind the scenes
This battle was one of many scenes featured in Disney Parks' Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction. It was one of various options that guests randomly encountered on the ride. Originally Disney Imagineers planned to not include snowspeeders and AT-ATs in the Hoth sequence, for fear of conflicting with the battle from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, set years later. Learning of the plan, George Lucas insisted the designers include those elements since fans would expect them when visiting Hoth. Lucas suggested another battle between the two factions could have happened earlier, with the Empire not expecting the Rebels to return to the same place.[3][4]
