The title of this article is conjectural.

Although this article is based on official information from the Star Wars Legends continuity, the actual name of this subject is pure conjecture.

The Battle of Atterol was a space battle between the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Galactic Empire that erupted when Rebel Y-wings and Z-95 Headhunters attempted to raid a small Imperial convoy as it passed through the Atterol system.

The Battle

Two Rebel squadrons, Gold and Green, came out of hyperspace near Atterol and proceeded to attack modular conveyors from Xibo Group as they passed through the star system. Xibo Group, however, was under the protection of escort frigate Tegret, which launched TIE/IN interceptors to drive off the venerable snubfighters before they could disable the convoy.

As the Rebels and Imperials clashed, three Gamma-class ATR-6 assault transports from the Rebellion's Storm Group dropped out of hyperspace. Storm Group's mission was to board and capture at least one of the Imperial cargo freighters. The Imperial interceptors were tasked with preventing this outcome.

The elite Rebel starfighter unit known as Rogue Squadron had made preparations to intercede if the Imperials gained the upper hand, but only a handful of their X-wings were available for the mission. The Empire may have summoned Rho Squadron, the ubiquitous backup squadron of Assault Gunboats, if Tegret or its fighters needed to call for reinforcements.

Behind the scenes

As players can participate in the mission "Raid Imperial Convoy near Atterol" in the computer game Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter on either the Rebel or the Imperial side, both sides have conflicting mission objectives, and victory is not essential to access the next set of missions, the battle itself is considered canon but the canon outcome is unknown.

The ships listed in this article are those found in the battle Operation: Clean Sweep, using the default craft assigned to the player.

The name given to the battle in this article, while conjectural, is approximated from in-game text stating that the attack took place while the Imperial convoy was passing through the Atterol system. Atterol, which the mission title says the raid took place near, is depicted on the mission briefing map as a celestial body. A sprite that appears to represent a planet appears in the starfield during the mission.

The mission title in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is unusual in that it appears to be written from an in-universe Rebel point of view, while Operation: Clean Sweep is framed as an Imperial operation.

Notes and references

  1. The game Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and its expansion Balance of Power Campaigns do not provide any information about their timeline other than it takes place during the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance (2 BBY4 ABY). Nevertheless, some clues permit to place the game and its expansion around 3 ABY. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter shows the Empire making extensive use of TIE/ad starfighters. The previous game of the series, Star Wars: TIE Fighter, established that the TIE/ad starfighter was introduced during the Sepan campaign (which is set in 3 ABY per the reasoning here). We can conclude that the game is set between 3 ABY and 4 ABY. Moreover, the most advanced Imperial starfighters from Star Wars: TIE Fighter (the TIE/d "Defender" starfighter and the Missile Boat) were not present in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, suggesting that the game takes place before their introduction, also dated to 3 ABY as the entire TIE Fighter game is set in 3 ABY (per the reasoning here).
