"Bark mites! Fascinating little creatures, but they absolutely destroy the greenery!"
Risha Sinan, to a spacer[3]

Bark mites were insects on Rori and Endor. They ate bark, and made large hives in trees and caves.

Bark mites possessed eight limbs in total; they walked on six legs, and had two grasping arms with pincers.[1] These beasts were herbivorous insects. They were usually docile but they could become aggressive when protecting their lair.[2]

Races and subspecies included the bloodseeker mite, the forest mite and the wood mite.[1]

History

"It is the great many-legged warrior of the bark mites, fierce and relentless. We call it the Chirping Death. Hrnnh -- maybe that is not such a good name. Not fearsome. The bloodseeker is fearsome."
Jorak, to a spacer[4]

During the Galactic Civil War, a colony of giants bark mites lived in a cave on the Nabooian moon of Rori. The creatures had discovered that the cave was damp and warm, making it a perfect nursery for their brood.[2] The scientist Risha Sinan discovered the cave after the Battle of Yavin.[3]

After the Battle of Yavin, Doctor Maldien conducted illegal and highly dangerous bioengineering experiments in a laboratory on Corellia to create very aggressive and intelligent creatures. This included engineered bark mites.[5]

In 1 ABY,[6] the hunter Sloan Rusper noticed that something in the water of Rori turned wild animals, including forest mites, into dangerous marauding beasts. He thus tasked a spacer to kill a deadly forest mite guardian that threatened the Restuss Arts Jubilee.[7] The same year, the Sanyassan Marauder fightmaster Jorak ordered a spacer to kill a bloodseeker mite which was attacking the livestock of the Marauders on Endor.[4]

Behind the scenes

Bark mites appeared in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[8]

  6. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
