The Badlands were a desolate region in the southern hemisphere of the Expansion Region planet Pamorjal. Vaguely ovoid in shape, the badlands were roughly 64,000 kilometers in size and sited about 400 kilometers from Pamorjal's main settlement, Beldon. The region was devoid of life and consisted of dry, cracked soil covered with small pieces of black stone and small, noxious puddles of undrinkable water. The region was permeated with the dark side of the Force, which radiated out from the center of the badlands and made passing Force-users feel uncomfortable.[1]
The Badlands were created over twenty millennia before the Battle of Hoth after a Dark Jedi used the powerful dark side artifact the Soulsaber to drain all life from the region to enhance his strength in a fight against a group of Jedi. During the Galactic Civil War, the crew of the Rebel Alliance YT-1300 light freighter Lazy Katarn ventured to the Badlands while hunting the Dark Jedi Thaum Rystra.[1]
