"What was the purpose of the attack?"
"I never found out. I suppose they wanted to make us afraid."
―Baron Shkan-Shkan Yew and Mon Mothma[1]

An attack was staged in Hanna City, in Chandrila, by the Confederacy of Independent Systems in the early stages of the Clone Wars. The Separatists caught planetary defenses off guard, and jammed all transmissions as Chandrila attempted to send urgent calls to Coruscant. Dreadnoughts positioned themselves over the capital city, and commenced the bombardment. The Chandrilan forces, practically nonexistent, had been unable to launch a counter-attack, but the deflector shield over the city was able to keep its inhabitants from harm's way.[1]

Officials, including Senator Mon Mothma, sought refuge in a bunker. The people of the city after a while left their homes and emerged into streets and plazas, shouting defiantly and cheering at the sky as the bombs fell, treating the detonations and the electric iridescence of the shields as a pyrotechnic display. The officials in the bunker also joined the celebrations in the streets.[1]

After seven hours and seventeen minutes, the Separatists ceased the attack and left Chandrila.[1] In 19 BBY,[2] when recounting this incident to Baron Shkan-Shkan Yew, Mothma revealed she never learned the purpose of the aggression, and speculated that it may have been intended as a show of force to incite fear.[1]

Behind the scenes

The attack on Hanna City was mentioned in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[1]

THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
