Air shrimps were a type of creature found on the gas giant Bespin, where they lived in the planet's breathable layer of upper atmosphere amongst the algal trees that grew there.[2] The shrimps had pink skin and black eyes, with a segmented body ending in a barbed tail. They possessed a proboscis on the front of their head and three tendril like limbs located just behind their eyes. The creatures' wings were veined and tattered.[1] Air shrimps traveled in schools and shimmered in rainbow colors to warn each other of predators like the rawwk, which would chase air shrimp schools[2] and prey upon them.[1]
At some point after 34 ABY, an illustration of an air shrimp was included on a map of Bespin thought to have been drawn by the artist Gammit Chond based purely on travelers' tales. The map was later restored and published by the Graf Archive in the Galactic Atlas[1] and was also included in the updated version of the book.[3]
Behind the scenes
Air shrimp were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[4] The creature was then pictured in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, which was written by Emil Fortune and illustrated by Tim McDonagh.[1]
