The AB-1 Landspeeder was a compact civilian repulsorcraft of the Imperial Era. Built for tight urban spaces and quick maneuvering rather than cross-country travel, it seated a pilot and one passenger and was regarded as a practical choice for city use.
Characteristics
No-frills yet sporty,[2] the AB-1 featured a compact design built around a two-seat open cockpit.[1] Its stubby hull sloped sharply downward at the nose, a shape intended to improve aerodynamic stability. A repulsorlift engine pod was mounted on each side of the fuselage, giving the landspeeder its signature appearance.[2]
While not the fastest speeder of its era, the AB-1 offered balanced performance well-suited to its role as an urban runabout. Its responsive acceleration and climbing ability allowed it to handle sharp inclines and quick bursts of speed. In terms of overall capability, the AB-1 fell below high-end speeders such as the AV-21 and the BARC speeder, but compared favorably with common civilian models like the X-34 and XP-38. Its small footprint and agile handling made it a popular choice for navigating tight spaces and city streets.[2]
In practice, the AB-1 Landspeeder carried two beings,[2] a pilot and a passenger,[1] and were obtainable through trade, vendor and bazaar purchases,[2] or by crafting through Master Artisans[3] and Engineering Traders.[2] Construction required a variety of components, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, chemicals, and sub-assemblies such as a repulsor field generator, stabilization frame, and avionics systems.[1] Owners could visually customize their vehicles using a Vehicle Customization Kit, while damaged speeders could be repaired with a Vehicle Restoration Kit.[2]
History
The AB-1 designation dated back to the time before the formation of the Galactic Republic, when the original AB-1 "floatcoach" served as a prototype for what would eventually evolve into the modern version of the landspeeder.[4]
By the time of the Galactic Civil War, around 1 ABY,[5] the AB-1 had evolved into a contemporary production model. Compact and reliable, it was a popular urban speeder with balanced performance, available to citizens across the galaxy through open market trade and local vendors.[2]

- ↑ The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
