Think about it. They can cut through pretty much everything near instantly, which would suggest extreme heat, to the tune of tens of thousands of degrees, but they have no radiating heat, as is evidenced by the fact that if you hold one an inch away from flesh, the flesh isn’t instantly burnt to a crisp, and if you use one underwater, the water doesn’t boil. They also obviously have mass, as is evidenced by the effort they use to cut things, and the speed of which Jedi and Sith swing the lightsabers. My theory is that the lightsaber moves the atoms of whatever material it cuts through out of its way, and the heat is actually from the friction of the atoms moving so quickly, which is why only the material which come into direct contact with the lightsaber is melted/burned.
