I’ve read the legends trilogy (wonderful), specter of the past, and the first canon Thrawn book (I couldn’t finish the second one, the constant change between past and present was hard to keep track of). Anything else I should know/read before I start?

Well, by stating he was the senate, all previous senators ceased to exist; their bodies turned to dust, and Palpatine gained their strength, knowledge, and overall energy/power. However, most were simply senators, so his power level didn’t increase significantly.
