The prequel trilogy is the only one of the 3 trilogies where the 3rd movie isn't the lowest-grossing movie. The lowest-grossing movie of the prequel trilogy is Attack of the Clones, the 2nd movie of the trilogy. Those are the highest-grossing movies of each trilogy (but in their initial releases)

The movie was released on May 25, 1977 and grossed $503 million worldwide in its initial release (and $775 million after re-releases), which made it at the time the highest-grossing movie in the world (surpassing Jaws) until it was surpassed by E.T. in 1982. It's now the 109th highest-grossing movie in the world*. It was also the highest-grossing movie distributed by Fox (surpassing The Sound of Music) until it was surpassed by Independence Day 1 in 1996 and the highest-grossing Star Wars movie until it was surpassed by The Phantom Menace in 1999. It was also the 1st movie in history to gross $500 million, the 2nd movie in history to gross $400 million (after Jaws), the 4th movie in history to gross $300 million (after Gone with the Wind, The Exorcist and Jaws), the 6th movie in history to gross $200 million (after Gone with the Wind, The Godfather 1, The Exorcist, Jaws and Bambi) and the 5th to do so in its initial release (after Gone with the Wind, The Godfather 1, The Exorcist and Jaws), and the 21st movie in history to gross $100 million and the 20th to do so in its initial release. It's honestly my 2nd least favorite from the main Star Wars movies (above Attack of the Clones)

*It would rank 230th if The Empire Strikes Back (1980), which grossed $400 million in its initial release (and $538 million after re-releases), Gladiator (2000), which grossed $460 million in its initial release (and $503 million after re-releases) and this movie had never been re-released
