@Nobody90 (or anyone else who’d like to), please feel free to make an entirely new thread to discuss the Galactic Racer announcement.
Anyway, after spending a little more time with this news, I’m realizing what a potentially genius play this is by Lucasfilm to introduce the Old Republic into Canon. Scrolling through the EU Reddit, and watching EckhartLadder’s coverage of this news, people have been pointing out just how little of the classic KOTOR titles have actually been contradicted by Canon, even if, overall, they are technically out of continuity. This all sets the stage for our first major Canon TOR story to be a spiritual successor to the old games, set at the end of the era, and explicitly about exploring the ultimate “Fate” of that era, and walking through its history.
By doing it this way—[re]starting at the end of the Old Republic—Lucasfilm has set themselves up to seamlessly pick and choose which elements of the old games they want to bring back into continuity, and in a way that makes perfect narrative sense. Whether directly through the main the plot line, or indirectly through the world (a la holofiles/journal entires, side quests, etc.) they can construct the whole era retroactively.
And, for anyone in agreement with me that an Old Republic film or television series is inevitable, this feels like a really, really smart way of clearing the cobwebs.
Of course, my entire theory could prove moot if this thing gets trapped in development hell, as seems to be the theme with Star Wars games, but time will tell.
The release window for this game will be interesting to watch, because I do believe that an announcement of this magnitude will have broader implications on future stories. We were just talking a few weeks ago about how the NJO films they’re developing might tie back into some ancient past—I believe OP of that thread posited Atha Prime, and I suggested the Rakata.
Either way, though Canon has more or less failed to live up to its promise of actually following through on interconnected storytelling, its also still true that when they were developing the High Republic, suddenly remnants of that era became increasingly important in stories set during the Jedi Purge and Galactic Civil War era. I just have to believe that properly launching the Old Republic now, of all times, as Star Wars is gearing up for post-Skywalker Saga stories, is not a coincidence, and indeed has massive implications on both the past, and the future of the franchise.
All that said, even if this game is not nearly as earth-shattering as I think it will be from a continuity standpoint, I’m still most excited for the game itself. The past ten years of SW gaming have been rough. FOTOR (FOTOR? SWFOTOR? Christ, these acronyms are getting out of hand) could harken back to that golden era of SW games that so many of us have missed so dearly.
