We’ve got some truly historic news today, folks.
It’s been one of the Internet’s worst kept secrets for a while now, but today, we have official confirmation from Lucasfilm: after months of very credible leaks and rumors, we now know with absolute certainty that original 1977 theatrical cut of Star Wars: A New Hope will be getting a limited theatrical rerelease as part of the studio’s 50th anniversary celebration for both the film itself, and the franchise as a whole.
We already know that some version of the film will be given a theatrical run in April, but, seemingly separate from that is the theatrical cut’s release on February 19, 2027. Read the full briefing on StarWars.com for more details.
It still stands to be seen if this will be a one time thing, or if the original cut will also be given a physical and/or streaming release at some point down the line. And then there’s also the question of if TESB, and ROTJ will also be given the same treatment. But, in any case this opens the floodgates. An official, public rerelease of the theatrical cut in any capacity has felt like a pipe dream for 20 some years now. This is some of the most consequential Star Wars news in a long, long time, and represents a major sea-change within the company.
