Hello and welcome to this week's installment of Cue by Cue.
Today we're going to be listening to 9m2 Vader Shows Up.
This cue is 42 bars long and was orchestrated by Al Woodbury.
Here's the tops of the sketch and the orchestrated score:
Note the "Vadar" spelling error again.
Now let's listen to the cue together:
At 0:00 the cue begins with a short dark cello intro as Lando stares at the broken C-3PO pieces, before leading into another stately rendition of the Cloud City March at 0:07 as Lando continues giving the heroes a tour.
This fizzles out at 0:35, leading to a short rest, which is followed by dark brass at 0:41 for the sudden reveal of Vader.
At 0:43, a modified brass hint of the first part of the Imperial March. This is followed by a flute whoosh for Vader pulling Han's blaster to him with the Force.
Some more brass at 0:48, which leads into a couple short statements of Boba Fett's theme at 0:52.
A brass sting as the stormtroopers are revealed at 0:57, leading to some sad strings at 1:03.
Some transitional percussion plays as the door closes at 1:17. One heroic statement of Luke's theme appears at 1:20, which ends with repeating hesitant brass figures as his X-Wing flies off at 1:28.
The final string and woodwind notes are held as the scene fades back to Chewbacca in prison. Thus, the cue ends...
No picture edits appear to have been made between scoring and recording, and no music edits were made either. The sting for the appearance of the stormtroopers at 0:57 does appear to be slightly out of sync, but given that the music before and after that is synced up correctly it doesn't seem to be evidence of a footage change.
Since I don't have a recording log I'm unsure what day this cue was recorded, but based on the take numbers written in the sketch it was likely recorded in early January. I'm also unsure how many takes were recorded, but according to the sketch the performance edit uses takes 126 and 127.
This cue has been officially released on one album:
3) In 1997 on RCA Victor's 2-CD Special Edition set
More specifically, 9m2 Vader Shows Up can be heard:
From 1:00-2:43 of disc 2 track 7 "Betrayal at Bespin" on the 1997 album.
Thankfully this release is complete, has a clean opening and ending, and has the film mix.
Unfortunately, it does play at the wrong speed, but this can easily be corrected in an audio editor:
1997 set needs to be sped up by 0.600
For my edit above I used a speed corrected copy of the 1997 set.
That's all I have for today, thanks for reading! Feel free to leave any comments or questions.
Next week we'll be listening to 9m3 Putting ThreePio Together. See you then!
