Hello fellow Wookieepedians! Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Philip Murphy, an artist who's worked on Star Wars comics for IDW.
Many thanks to him for sitting down with us!
Q1: How long have you been working as an illustrator professionally, and what’s your favorite part about the profession?
A1: I have been working professionally going on 16 years now and I think my favorite part is getting to work on properties I grew up with and getting the chance to add a little something to that universe I've loved for so long.
Q2: How did you first get introduced to Star Wars?
A2: Oh going back years now to the early 90s one summer weekend renting A New Hope from a local video store called Delta-Vision I loved it so much we went back the next day to pick up Empire and Jedi.
Q3: If you could choose one Star Wars character to illustrate for a future project, who would it be?
A3: Definitely spoiled for choice there ha! I've wanted to draw a Jaxxon story for the longest time or heck a Salacious B. Crumb story would be cool I bet that weird little guy got into a few adventures in his time.
Q4: For Star Wars, one of the projects you worked on was Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars – Battle Tales 5, set during the Clone Wars. What was your favorite aspect of writing for that time period in the Star Wars galaxy?
A4: That was a fun story I think my favourite part was getting to design an alien race and world that's a part of the Star Wars universe now.
Q5: Battle Tales also introduced a new species - the furry Qubey. I’d love if you could talk about illustrating them a bit!
A5: We definitely wanted them to be a cute species then the idea unfolded of maybe the were a distant relation of the Ewoks that evolved to survive on a snowy tundra planet instead of a lush Forest Moon so the heavier white fur larger ears and blue eyes evolved from that.
Q6: The moon from Battle Tales - Caliban - was a cold one, which resulted in Obi-Wan Kenobi and his troopers donning winter gear, rather than their more often used normal Jedi attire. What was your process for drawing (or possibly designing) those winter outfits?
A6: Luckily Obi and the Clones already had an established winter gear from the show so we had those outfits to choose from.
Q7: The other Star Wars comic of yours was the story “Tales from Wild Space: Look Before You Leap.” Curiously, the planet was never named. By any chance did it have an informal name in the script, or if it didn’t, what would you have liked to call it if you had the chance to suggest a name?
A7: I think we wanted to keep it a mystery to tie into the not having all the information before you make a choice lesson of the story . If I were to name it hmmm I don't know I think Arrakis is already taken right haha!
Q8: Thanks for sitting down with us! If people would like to keep up to date with you and your future projects, what social media platforms should they find you on?
A8: Thanks for having me its always a treat to talk Star Wars and you can find me on pretty much everything at crashtesterX.
