Hello fellow Wookieepedians! Recently, we had the opportunity to chat with Uzuri Art, an illustrator who's worked on numerous pieces of artwork for the Star Wars: Card Trader app, as well as a variant comic cover for The High Republic Adventures.
Q1: How long have you been working as an illustrator professionally, and what’s your favorite part about the profession?
A1: I’ve been working professionally since 2021. My favorite part of the work is being able to collaborate with art directors and shape just a bit of the art that makes up my favorite franchises. It’s truly such an honor.
Q2: Do you use digital tools, traditional media, or a combination of both in your art?
A2: I am fully digital.
Q3: How did you first get introduced to Star Wars?
A3: I got introduced to Star Wars at a very young age because my family watched it. It was so long ago I don’t quite remember how I got introduced. But I do vaguely remember Revenge of the Sith in the theaters because there was so much lava on the screen.
Q4: Star Wars-wise, do you have any pieces of your artwork you’re particularly proud of?
A4: I’m still proud of “Form III” which is a piece depicting Obi-Wan performing his iconic pre-battle move in all the moments we know: The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Rebels. I’m really fond of how he gradually moves to the right.
Q5: What’s the most challenging Star Wars piece you’ve worked on, and why?
A5: On May the Fourth, 2020, I decided to illustrate a piece celebrating as many characters as I could from each on-screen Star Wars property at the time. The challenging thing about this piece was fitting as many characters as I had planned as well as making sure each of them were recognizable despite the simplicity of the style. There were only a few lines I could do to really inform the viewer who the character was.
Q6: Are there any Star Wars artists or concept designers who have influenced pieces of your work?
A6: Drew Struzan and Tsuyoshi Nagano. Their compositions are always so vibrant and dynamic and interpret characters so well. I love when art can tell a story on its own just by facial expressions or how a character is turned, and I think their art really does that well.
Q7: If you could choose one Star Wars character to illustrate for a future project, who would it be?
A7: Elzar Mann. It would be such a joy to illustrate him and expand on The High Republic’s amazing artwork.
Q8: Thanks for sitting down with us! If people would like to keep up to date with your work, what social media platforms should they find you on?
A8: I’m on Instagram @uzuriart. Facebook, X/Twitter and Tumblr as @uzuriartonline. Thank you for the interview!
