Okay… this was interesting, I guess.
I don’t know that I really needed a flashback episode just yet. Or at all. I kind of would’ve liked to have learned about their backstory naturally as the series progressed, especially given there’s only 8 episodes so we don’t have a lot of spare time here. But I suppose it wouldn’t be a D+ Star Wars series if it actually budgeted it’s time properly. Zing.
Setting that aside, what’s here is…fine, but hardly remarkable.
The tension between the characters was quite good and the juxtaposition of the witches and the Jedi with regards to the ethics of how they both handle children was compelling. I enjoyed the discussion on destiny, and the ability of children to decide their future.
I always love the addition of new Force wielding groups, especially a coven. Too bad they couldn’t get Katie Lucas involved for this one.
I’ll say there’s some great shots here. I really loved the planets in the background getting marginally closer. It was a fun detail, and it was nice that they kept it subtle.
However, all that said, I still feel like the writing is just not that great, unfortunately. I like a lot of the music, but some of it, particularly during the Ascension, was quite goofy and took me out of the scene. And the costuming looked kind of cheap in some spots.
I guess I’m just a little confused by the ending. I mean, I’m no expert on the subject, but the dead witches didn’t exactly look like they died from a fire. I don’t know if that’s an intentional decision and there’s some more going on here, or if it’s just an oversight/Disney didn’t want graphic, mass immolation in their space show. I’m assuming it’s the former. It really feels like there’s more to this story than what we’re being shown, and that the Jedi may be responsible for what happened in a more direct sense. I just have no idea where things are going from here. Not that that’s a bad thing, but I feel like this episode threw a wrench in the gears after all the momentum that was set up last week.
Again, I appreciate the originality this series is bringing to the table (as far as Star Wars is concerned), but this wasn’t necessarily what I would call a quality episode of television. I do love Sol though. He’s very cool.
