I don't mind either, but from a narrative perspective, I find the Dark Forces Origin is better due to the fact that within the story, it's two sets of plans. One which was on Toprawa and the other on Danuta, the latter of which Kyle went for.
This makes it a lot harder to actually get the plans, because you're needing to have to basically set up two entirely separate operations, one of which can go completely sideways if things go bad. So you may have one set of plans, but then you could also lose another set, or lose both.
For a station this important, I don't see it being a good idea to have all eggs in one basket sort of situation.
It also doesn't involve Vader, which means Leia's interaction with him later, as far as trying to bluff her way out of the situation....makes more sense, because Vader didn't just witness her ship leave after a battle, that he knows(directly) has the plans.
I’d prefer a team of rebels stealing the plans instead of just one man. That way, Kyle isn’t so overpowered and it seems more accurate to the opening of A New Hope.
^ Kyle wasn't the only one to steal the plans, there was a whole other team in Dark Forces on Toprawa, that took the other plans. Kyle only stole part of the plans.
Though I guess technically speaking, it's just to reconcile the fact that in the original Star Wars Audio telling from '81, the Battle of Toprawa was the sole battle in which the Rebels got the DS plans. Whereas Dark Forces went with another version, so the Dark Forces book series just fixed that hiccup.
Of course I'm not sure if the OP was meaning the book or game, or just like...the overall story in what actually happened. /Shrug
I mean if we're just going by the game itself, then yeah, I guess I'd go with the RO movie because the game doesn't really...do a whole lot to actually give any sort of narrative interest and was straightforward as far as I recall anyway.
But if we're going by the whole storyline not just from the game, then narratively I feel it's better.
That's a very interesting perspective @Wolfscar45 First time I've heard of an argument for the original Legends version. Even I as a diehard Legends advocate prefer Rogue One's account and wondered if it even makes logical sense to "reconcile" it with Legends in my headcanon.
@Sol Pacificus That's figuring if we're going by the whole account of the EU version and not just going by the game. I figure it was the former, given the game doesn't....like really offer much, it's just a run and gun type of game, so there's nothing really there to look at.
The EU, it makes more sense and has the Empire thinking smart on this situation. Like you have this big important battle station, that is very key...why would you stick the plans in a single location? It would be better to break them up, this way in the event one part of the plans gets taken....it doesn't really do much for the opposition.
For example...you get the Topwara plans? Great, you have access to....the hull design and life support infrastructure. This doesn't really help a whole lot.
On the other side, you get the Danuta plans? You have access to offensive and defensive emplacements. Ok great, but you have no idea where these things are, because you lack the actual design of whatever has these things involved.
Ontop of that, the opposition has to plan for two operations, one of which you need to account for the possibility of your operative turning on you and going back to the Empire in this case, Kyle.
To say nothing that Danuta and Toprawa are in two completely separate regions of the galaxy.
This all before the EU broke up the plans even further than that later on, but that's not part of the discussion. Still though, I do like both, I just like the DF take better narrative wise.
Rogue One
Didn’t read Dark Forces
