Definitely his unique experience in the New Jedi Order. Kyle’s had an incredible journey from an imperial stormtrooper to a Jedi Master in Luke’s Jedi Order. His fall to the dark side made him walk away from the Jedi Order and become a mercenary but that wasn’t the end of his time with the order. Even though he was very unsure if he ever had what it takes to become a Jedi, he still acknowledged that he wouldn’t be alone as long as the Jedi Order was around. He’s a great example of what one of the things I like most about Luke’s NJO; even if you leave, you’re always welcome to come back and even if you don’t want to be a Jedi anymore the Jedi Order will always be there to help you. And eventually that exactly what he did as he went on to become an instructor for Luke’s Jedi Order. I really like how he doesn’t want to be addressed as “Master Katarn”.

If you think about it, Kyle Katarn’s development as a lightsaber duelist almost mirrored that of Luke Skywalker; both received limited training by members of the old Jedi Order and their extensive combat experience molded them into exceptional blades beings in the New Jedi Order. And both Jedi were the reigning masters of Form V Djem So in that era.

In Kyle’s case, with limited training from the Force ghost of Qu Rahn, he defeated Inquisitor Jerec (who strength in the dark side rivaled Vader’s) and his cadre of Dark Jedi minions. As a Knight, he slew dozens of Reborn warriors and bested the Dark Jedi Tavion Axmis and her Master Desann, who was amped by the dark side nexus in the Jedi academy on Yavin 4. As a Battlemaster, he held his own against the Sith Lord Darth Caedus, who relied on his Force powers to defeat the legendary Jedi.
