While I like Obi-Wan as a character, at the time of the Phantom Menace he was NOT experienced enough to be a teacher to anyone, much less the literal Chosen One. There were many other factors that contributed to make him poorly suited for a student like Anakin as well & I personally count this as one the Jedi Order’s most asinine blunders.
But it’s not enough to just be against something, you have to be for something better. So…who should have trained him & why?
For myself, I would have recommended Mace Windu for a number of reasons.
First & foremost: experience. As one of the most senior & respected members of the Jedi Council, his knowledge & teaching ability was undeniable & far outstripped what little a former Padawan like Obi-Wan was capable of at the time.
Second: temperament. One of Obi-Wan’s biggest problems as a teacher was his over-familiarity that saw him treat Anakin more akin to a little brother than a pupil. This had the unfortunate effect of creating an environment lacking in discipline that only got worse over time as Anakin was allowed too much freedom to test its boundaries without serious pushback.
To be fair, I don’t entirely blame this on Obi-Wan or Anakin. Obi-Wan shouldn’t have had that responsibility placed on his shoulders when he wasn’t ready for it & most of his failures can be put down to simple inexperience. Likewise, Anakin was a special case who hadn’t grown up under the rigid structure of the Jedi Order & so faced a significant learning curve other students weren’t under.
This is the reason I believe he should have been placed with someone experienced like Windu who would have immediately begun instilling discipline in his younger charge & whose authority/respect would be expected instead of requested like Obi-Wan.
This would have been rough on Anakin for certain & probably would have made him feel stifled for a time, but I also firmly believe this rigid structure from the start would have ultimately been far more beneficial to his growth as a person as well as a Jedi.
Which leads me to point number 3: mindset. Out of all the Jedi, I believe Mace Windu was uniquely suited to bring out the best of Anakin’s potential because of his own unique experience with the darkness within him, a darkness shared by Anakin but never truly given a proper outlet.
In time, I believe Windu would have seen that darkness but looked at it as an opportunity instead of something to be feared. This would also have had the effect of helping the two of them better relate to each other & strengthen their bond as Anakin would realize he wasn’t actually alone in his feelings & that said darkness could turned to the light for good.
I believe with Windu’s instilled discipline guiding him, his master would have considered him worthy of learning Vaapad & be taught to channel his darkness into a weapon of the light in defense of others. Not only would this help Anakin find balance within & make him an even deadlier duelist than he was in canon, it would help Windu find peace over his own perceived failing of his former student.
I believe the end result of Windu’s training would have been a far more mature & disciplined Anakin who’d made peace with his inner nature & possessed of power/skill that would have dwarfed his canon iteration & would have become a Master of much acclaim.
What do you think? Would Windu have been the best choice or would another have done it better?
