Never underestimate the high ground
No because he fell into a melting pit, it wasn't just a pit down onto another empty floor or what have you. The shaft went directly into something that would have melted his entire body and there wasn't anything within the shaft he could have grabbed onto.
But even moreso than that...what narrative purpose did Maul have? Let's backtrack for a moment here....before Maul came back in TCW, who did we have?
Savage Oppress, now let's break down his overall character type.
Zabrak
2. Double bladed red lightsaber
3. Remarked by Dooku as having potential that was basically that of the late Sith Darth Maul.
....Conclusion folks? Savage was = Maul of TCW...the only difference is that Savage was bigger and he was....yellow.
Maul coming back, he didn't accomplish any of his goals that he set out to do. He narratively didn't really add anything, that Savage couldn't do.
Kill Obi-Wan? He obviously can't, yet he's in a position at least twice where he could but just doesn't.
Get back to Sidious? No because the guy already as his eyes set on Anakin Skywalker. Regarding that, Maul being a sniveling and crying/begging opponent after he gets bested by Sidious is just...so pathetic and just diminished him as a character in my eyes, I don't see how people like that.
These 2 goals and yet he failed at them, which by then he doesn't really have much of a purpose, he's a 3rd wheel spinning.
Maul builds up this criminal empire and takes over the Mandalorians?(This also in part to get back with Sidious, which serves nothing because of the previous point) This doesn't serve to do anything, because the next time we see him in Rebels....he's stuck on Malachor. We never see him really do anything with the resources he's built up, we just see that he has them....and then he's stuck on Malachor.
Tell me something folks, replace Maul in TCW with Savage throughout the whole show. Does the show still work? Yes it does, only it works better because Savage is a character that can go in any direction, that isn't tied to Obi-Wan or Sidious.
Yes you can have him with an arc of trying to kill Obi-Wan for the murder of his brother....which honestly, that would make for a better narrative for his character than what we got. He won't be able to, because obviously Obi-Wan has to survive. But this would still character build him.
But you can still do the things such as making him a Crime Lord or taking over the Mandalorians, you can then actually DO things with these elements because Savage as a character can be anything, cause he isn't tied down to being an Apprentice to the Lord of the Sith, he isn't really tied down to having this vendetta against Obi-Wan for ruining his life.
People wanted more screen time of Maul? Fine then do a mini TV series or something BEFORE the events of TPM, show his training under Sidious, show him what he did for him before the Invasion of Naboo. Stuff that would actually stick with him as a character.
But really my main gripe with bringing Maul back is that they sidelined Savage, when he didn't need to be for a character that just didn't belong within the Clone Wars Timeframe. Savage was the Maul of TCW, he should have stayed that.
Somehow Darth Maul retuned.
Don't worry I'm here 🤣. I agree with pretty much everything Wolfscar said. Savage could have been everything that Maul was in TCW, he was a cool character but was sidelined by the desire to bring back Maul.
I wish Maul never died and was in all the prequels and got killed by Anakin in RotS. He easily could have filled Dooku’s role with some slight changes. No offense to the great Christopher Lee, but Dooku was a weak character in my opinion. Maul would’ve been better as the apprentice throughout the PT.
Yes because I was always curious to know how he came back to life and it worked well to develop him a more interesting character
Why is there so much maul hate he doesn’t dersve this
Don’t hate him. I just hate the fact that narratively he wasn’t needed for TCW and replaced a potential interesting character that was basically him just bigger and yellow.
Na it was a waste
As cool as that visionary comics that I read.
What do you think?
