I'd guess 38% yes is probably higher than if you'd asked on the Wook five years ago.
It is a controversial film in the ultra fan base but less so in the wider, more casual fan base.
Like many have said though, much of the dislike comes from its characterisation of Luke.
It's apparently popular with critics as well, with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
But don't get me started on RT, I'm just reporting, not endorsing :D
It is probably the most divisive SW film.
ESB took a bit of flack on release. Too dark, Yoda puppet was ridiculous, unsatisfying ending.
And ROTJ took quite a lot, mainly for Ewoks which, despite my childhood love for them, wtf? But also because the whole first act (again I love it) was mainly a side quest that didn't really drive the main plot forward.
But all three are now seen as masterpieces. ANH for the way it changed cinema. ESB because it is a genuinely wonderful film. ROTJ maybe not a masterpiece but it did tie up the trilogy very satisfyingly.
I would say that the prequels weren't all that divisive in that most adult viewers seemed to think they were shit.
But now PT has a legion of fans, mainly those who were kids when it came out, who think it is amazing. Some even use the word masterpiece for ROTS (great film in many ways but nowhere near masterpiece).
So, you never know, TLJ may be vindicated in the end.
That said, TROS was such a mess that the ST may never get that future treatment. Although there seems to be an increasing number of ST fans each time it gets discussed. Again perhaps people who were kids when it hit cinemas.
I still maintain that if the ST had followed TLJ logically, rather than trying to roll back on fan complaints, it could have been a brilliant trilogy.
But what do I know? I think TPM, AOTC and TROS are mostly rubbish but loads of people really like them.
^I think you definitely have a point that the ST stands a fair chance of becoming more popular over time. While there may always be people who don’t care for individual parts or the entire trilogy, it seems very likely that the fanbase will grow, due to new fans who are introduced to SW through the ST and due to former „haters“ who start to come around to these movies.
I‘m already one of the latter, to some degree. The first two times I watched TLJ, I honestly hated it, mainly due to Luke’s characterisation and Rey and Kylo‘s relationship from this movie onward. There were things I liked from the start and things I was neutral about but they paled in comparison to my dislike of the aforementioned elements.
Now, after at least another rewatch, after reading one discourse after the other about the ST, arguments against and in favor of them - especially TLJ -, and after trying to look at certain plot points from new, specific point of views, I have gained more appreciation for TLJ.
There are still several things I have mixed feelings about, especially when it comes to TROS, and there are even one or two things about the ST I‘ve grown to dislike, and I still wouldn’t consider any of them among my absolute favorite SW-media.
However, my feelings about TLJ are definitely more positive now. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought that I‘d once write an essay defending a part of TLJ of all movies but here we are, lol.
So, it’s definitely possible that the trilogy gains more positive feedback. I‘d say shattered expectations were a main reason why TLJ was so controversial, and after a certain amount of time has passed, it’s very well possible that more people start to accept it as it is
^ Yes, the shattered expectations point is spot on.
That was why the PT suffered so badly on release.
I love SW and I love all of the films and series because it's SW. I've watched all of them over and over again. Even AOTC. But that doesn't mean I necessarily like them all.
It's like my dog, I love her because she's family but I don't particularly like her because she's paranoid, smelly, disobedient and annoying.
I like TLJ a lot but it has plenty issues. But it is in a field of deeply flawed films for comparison. At least it tried so.ething different. And I like different.
For me the truth is that only ANH, ESB and maybe Andor could be considered genuine masterpieces by a wider audience.
My favourite film is RO, I think it is brilliant but I don't consider it a masterpiece. I am well aware that my love for it is down to my preference for Empire Era due to my childhood nostalgia.
The only good thing that happened because of the sequels was My Stick: A Bad Lip Reading. (it's on Youtube)
But I misclicked and I said yes
YES! I love the BLR! I have all of the songs on my spotify playlist. lol
@Apocalypse40555 Which one is your favorite I liked the seagulls one the best
I could'nt decide, but they are both the best thing on the internet. Without a doubt
What do you think?
