In the mainline Star Wars movies, Darth maul only appears in The Phantom Menace before his unceremonious fall down a power generator. This naturally leaves a lot of ambiguity about his exact role in the Sith, which has fallen to supplementary material to cover. The thing is, Legends and Canon have different interpretations of Maul’s exact role in the Sith. In Canon, his role is pretty straightforward, serving as Darth Sidious’s first Sith Apprentice, and an official member of the Rule of Two. But in Legends Darth Maul was never actually an official Sith Lord in the Rule of Two, as Sidious only killed Darth Plagueis and became the Sith Master after Maul’s fall down the power generator. He was a mere assassin, whose claim to the Darth title was tenuous at best. In a way, I think the Legends version makes sense, because Sidious basically viewed him as a disposable weapon rather than a true successor. But I also like the idea of Maul as a full-blown Sith Lord which is the interpretation the original movie implied. So, my question for you is which of these versions of Maul’s story do you like better?
