We all know that the sequels are very controversial and described as “objectively the worst piece of content”.
Although these movies are hated, The prequels 10 years ago got the worst hatred far greater than this. People saying George lucas ruined their childhood, that Hayden Christiansen is the worst actor of all time, and that anything is better than what he gave us. This aged very interesting, people now saying that the prequels are a masterpiece even surpassing the originals. I find this real strange for what happened.
Some sequel fans say that the same treatment is going to happen to the sequel trilogy. Honest opinion, yes and no.
In 2015, Episode 7 was announced, everyone was so hyped, Hearing that it wasn’t made by Lucas and that it will be very similar to the original trilogy style. The force awakens came out and people loved it, looking past the fact it was very similar to ANH, they were just happy it wasn’t the prequels.
2 years later, Episode 8 was released, This was extremely controversial, you either loved this movie calling it a cinematic masterpiece, or you thought it was the worst thing you’ve ever seen and you want to throw your guts up.
2 more years later, The last Episode of the Skywalker saga was announced, people thought to themselves, “can it really get any worse?” and boy oh boy…
All three movies suffer one big problem, that being the planning, Abram’s admitted that He wanted to open up lots of mysteries because that’s the type of director he is. He thinks that Leaving audience wondering is what adds to good story telling, In some ways i agree with him. In other ways, i don’t know what he was thinking. This got even more hectic after He decided to have Rian Johnson write the sequel to his cliffhanger movie. this is the only star wars movie that leaves off with a cliff hanger. With the Last jedi, Rian had a different View, one big thing was “Subverting Expectations”. a very controversial tactic in story telling. for it to work, It has to be done perfectly, which rian succeeded in some parts, other parts no.
After the problems faced with Rians movie, They didn’t wanna face the same problem with the called “final installment” and brought Abram’s back to play it safe. JJ Abram’s believed that listening to fan feedback is the safest way to play and that basically retcons many of Johnson’s decisions, causing TROS to be the most frowned upon movie.
So back to my point, The sequels in 10 years.
The force awakens i believe will always be seen as the best sequel film, it will be seen as better than TPM and AOTC and maybe better than ROTJ. After there’s more installation between ROTJ and TFA, things will fall into place, making TFA fall smoother in the story
The last jedi, this movie will always stick out, no matter what happens, the decisions made in this movie changed how star wars is seen, this could be good or bad. It’s always going to be controversial and people will always keep leaning to one side or the other. This is the movie that doesn’t age the best.
The rise of skywalker, personally, this movie will age pretty well. Lots of parts will be looked past, more context will be added, and some scenes will really stick out, the scenes that really capture star wars. This won’t be the most loved but it will feel better.
Rey as a character will age, the hate that she’s getting will get more fleshed out, people will understand that the actress is different from the character, won’t be as revolutionary as Hayden Christianson but Daisy Ridley will eventually get her respect.
Tell me what you believe is the future of these movies.
